Wings

Level 50 Elyos wings

Everyone loves them but some say it's not something to get hyped up about. After all, Aion is not supposed to be a great MMORPG just because it has wings! But if you love them or you hate them you still need to know all about them.

Take a look...

There are two aspects to flight in Aion flying and gliding. Well there is a third falling but we won't cover that here except to say that yes if you fold your wings or run out of flight time you will drop like a rock. Trust me, you will find out the hard way as you learn to fly.

Flying:

At level 9 you acquire a quest to ascend (Become a Daeva) and you receive your first pair of wings right afterwards (Level 10). You will earn wing upgrades at levels 30, 40 and 50 with ever increasing abilities. There are many additional ways to increase both your flight speed and flight time available to you through armor enhancements, spells, manastones, titles, scrolls, food and drink. Flying is much faster then running and initially you can stay in the air for 60 seconds (60 seconds is your base flying time).

While you cannot fly in every area of Atreia (The world in AION) you can glide in any area. Flight requires Aether which is not available in quantities everywhere, most noticebly lacking in the starter zones. While this ushers in a few complaints from some people it really is a good idea. New players have enough on the hands learning to play they really do not need to worry about learning to fly on top of it. Aether is the life essence of the god AION and all Daeva are imbued with it and pull more of it from the surrounding area when wielding their powers.

In the lower right of your screen are the flight meters. If the center of the meter is dark, you cannot fly in that area (But you can Glide. See below):

Flight availableFlight not available

The green ring around the outer edge indicated how much time you have left to fly. When you run low on time the ring will turn red.

Flight time

This flight timer also appears above your head while flying:

AboveHeadFlightGauge

If you look on your minimap while in flight you will notice your normal icon is now a pair of colored wings.

Safe height to fallFall and die

If your wings are blue you can survive a fall from that height although you may be injured. If your wings are red you will die if you fall from that height. Cry

Shortcut: Description:
Page Up Open wings and rise off the ground
Page Down Fold wings and land
R Rise vertically
F Descend vertically
Scroll Lock Locks your altitude
Space bar When in flight, the Space Bar toggles between Gliding and Flying. Not in flight, it can be used to open your wings and glide down a hill. Beware, if you start out by Gliding, pressing the Space Bar again will retract your wings.
W,A,S,D Once in the air, you can use the W,A,S,D keys for movement as you would on the ground when walking or running. W and S will speed your flight up or slow your flight down. A turns left and D turns right.
Mouse Once in the air, the Mouse also functions as it did on the ground. While using the W,A,S,D keys, you can right-click and point the mouse in the direction you would like to go. Turning, ascent, and descent can be controlled using a combination of W,A,S,D and the mouse.

Gliding:

Gliding is very similar to flying. You can glide anywhere, even in no flight areas. All it takes is something high enough to jump off of; the top of some stairs, a small hill, a crate, a rock, anything actually. Press the spacebar once to jump into the air or just run off the object you are standing on. Once airborne press the spacebar again to open your wings and start gliding. When gliding the Flight Gauge is yellow rather than green like when glying.

Gliding

While gliding you gradually decend at a steady rate although it is possible to glide over an updraft which will raise your altitude some. Movement is controlled like normal with the WASD keys or mouse; lean forward to speed up (W), lean back to slow down (S) or turn left (A) or right (D). Like with flying, gliding is much faster than running which makes it great for getting around cities quicker or escaping mobs/other players. To stop gliding before you reach the bottom just press the spacebar and your wings will close. Gliding shares the same flight time limits as flying.

Flight Cooldown:

One important aspect of flying or gliding often ignored is the flight cooldown timer. Once you take off a 10 second cooldown starts (Note the cooldown starts when you open your wings, not when you close them). If you stop flying or gliding before the cooldown expires you will not be able to start flying or gliding again until it does. For example you are running through Sanctum when you start Gliding down some stairs. The total time gliding is 5 seconds. When you land and your wings fold you will not be able to glide again for another 5 seconds. Another example would be your running around in one of the worlds sky high cities when you accidentally fall off and start dropping like a rock. To stop yourself you hit the spacebar (Out of habit) to start gliding. If you by mistake press the spacebar twice you will open your wings then immediately fold them and you won't be able to open them again for another 10 seconds as the flight cooldown has started! Say hello to your soul healer after you ressurect.

The inside of the flight gauge turns dark when you first start flying or gliding and like a hand on a clock it quickly swings around until the cooldown has expired.
